Discover the legend of the Moor's heads:

An ancient legend tells that around the year 1100, during the period of the domination of the Moors in Sicily, in the Kalsa district of Palermo, he lived "a beautiful girl with pink skin comparable to peach blossoms at the peak of flowering and a beautiful pair of eyes that seemed to mirror the beautiful gulf of Palermo".

The lass he was almost always at home, and passed his days taking care of the plants on his balcony. One day a young man happened to pass by Fun, who as soon as he saw her, immediately fell in love with her and decided to have her at all costs. Then without delay he entered the girl's house and immediately declared his love to her.


The girlstruck by so much ardor, she returned the love of the young Moor, but soon her happiness vanished as soon as she learned that her beloved would soon leave her to return to the East, where a wife with two children. Thus it was that the girl waited for the night and as soon as the Moor fell asleep killed him and then cut off his head. From the head of the Moor he made a vase where he planted some basil and put it on display outside on the balcony.

In this way, the Moor, being unable to leave, would remain with her forever. Meanwhile, the basil grew luxuriantly and aroused the envy of all the inhabitants of the neighborhood who, not to be outdone, had clay pots built specifically in the shape of a Moor's Head.

Even today in the Sicilian balconies they can be admired Moro heads often also referred to as "Turkish heads" of exquisite workmanship, a nice warning for all husbands!
